Why we send couples to Kalkan, not Bodrum, in summer
22 April 2026
Bodrum has the brand. Kalkan has the bath-warm sea, the cliffside villas, and the absence of nightclubs.
What Bodrum has, what Kalkan has
Bodrum has Soho House, Maxx Royal beach club, and direct British Airways from Heathrow. It also has 750,000 visitors a month in August and roads that are jammed from the airport to Yalikavak. Kalkan has 30,000 visitors at peak, sea temperatures 1.5°C warmer than Bodrum (the Med stays warmer the further east you go), and a cliffside town with no through traffic. Both are excellent. They are different products.
Why couples in their 30s and 40s love Kalkan
The town is built on a 30-degree slope above the harbour. There are no nightclubs. Restaurants are on rooftops. Most villas have an infinity pool with a sea view that the photographs cannot do justice to. The harbour beach is small and pebbly so you go out by boat — Kaputas, Patara, the sunken city at Kekova. The whole holiday has a slower, quieter pulse than Bodrum.
Why first-time families lean Bodrum
Bodrum has direct flights, more big resorts, more sandy beaches, more activities for younger children. Kalkan rewards a second visit when you know what you want and you don't need a kids club. We send a lot of returning Bodrum families to Kalkan once their kids are 8+.
The price difference
At peak August, comparable villas in Kalkan run £1,500-£3,000 per week cheaper than equivalents in Yalikavak. The marina restaurants in Kalkan are 30-40% cheaper than Bodrum's. Wine list, however, is the same: a wider selection of Turkish wines than Greek islands.
What we recommend
For a first visit and direct flights: Bodrum. For couples who want sea, food and quiet: Kalkan. For families with school-age children: split the stay — three nights in Kalkan in a clifftop villa, four nights in a Bodrum resort.
