Turkey visa for UK citizens in 2026: e-visa, validity, and the gotchas

11 April 2026

The e-visa is straightforward but easy to mess up. Use the official site only. Print it.

Do UK citizens need a visa for Turkey?

As of January 2024, no — UK citizens visiting Turkey for tourism for stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period do not need a visa. You need a UK passport with at least 6 months validity from your date of entry.

Wait, I read about an e-visa

That was the rule until early 2024. The e-visa is no longer required for UK citizens, but the official e-visa website still exists and confused travellers sometimes pay for one they do not need. You do not need to pay anything to enter Turkey as a UK tourist for a short visit.

What about working or living there?

That is a residence permit, not a tourist visa, and it is a separate process you handle once you are in the country with a clear intent to stay. Tourist entry is straightforward.

At the airport

You queue at passport control with the e-Gate sticker if available, or with the human officer. They scan your passport, ask the purpose of visit ("holiday"), and stamp you in for 90 days. The stamp is your authorisation.

Driving

Your UK driving licence is valid in Turkey for 6 months. You need an International Driving Permit beyond that. Most rental cars come with the green card insurance — check before you sign.

Common mistakes

Booking the e-visa unnecessarily on a third-party site for £30. Letting your passport drop below 6 months validity. Not bringing a printed flight onward — Turkey does sometimes ask, especially if you are arriving on a one-way ticket.
