Turkey weather month by month: a UK travellers calendar (2026)
6 May 2026
A practical month-by-month Turkey weather guide built for British travellers — sea temperatures, sunshine hours, rain risk, and which destinations to pick for each month of the UK calendar.
January and February: cold inland, mild coast, brilliant city break
Istanbul averages 6-9°C with regular rain and occasional snow — a proper winter city break, atmospheric in the bazaars and quieter at Hagia Sophia. Cappadocia is the hidden gem of these months: 0-7°C, frequent snowfall over the fairy chimneys, balloon flights still operate on clear days, hotel rates are 40-60% off peak. Coastal Antalya, Bodrum and Marmaris run 12-16°C — too cold for swimming but excellent for hiking the Lycian Way, exploring ruins without crowds, and good food at a third of summer prices. Avoid: pure beach holidays. Pick: Istanbul long weekend (3 nights, 220-380 GBP per person from London), or a Cappadocia winter trip with snow-balloon photography.
March: shoulder season starts, but bring layers
Istanbul wakes up at 11-14°C with regular rain. Antalya and Bodrum hit 18-21°C and the sea climbs from 16°C to 18°C — too cold for sustained swimming but warm enough for boat trips with wetsuits. Cappadocia 5-13°C with the snow melting and the valleys turning green. The Lycian Way is at its prime — wildflowers everywhere, perfect hiking temperatures, no crowds. Easter often falls in March or April and is excellent value: school holiday flights are usually 40% below summer peak. Pick: hiking in Lycia from Kalkan or Kas as base, or a culture-focused tour combining Istanbul with Cappadocia.
April: beautiful, blooming, still pre-peak
April is one of our favourite months for Turkey. Antalya and Bodrum are 20-23°C with 8 hours of sunshine, sea temperatures climb from 18-20°C, the wildflowers carpet the Lycian hillsides, and resort prices are still at 50-60% of August rates. Some all-inclusive hotels open the second week of April; villa rentals are dramatically cheaper. Cappadocia 8-17°C — perfect balloon weather and balloon flights run almost every day. Istanbul 12-17°C with reduced rain. Pick: a 7-night south coast holiday combining beach days, Lycian sights and Pamukkale. Avoid: water sports requiring warm sea (windsurfing yes, snorkel without wetsuit no).
May: arguably the perfect month
May in Turkey is genuinely close to perfect for British travellers. Antalya and the south coast hit 24-27°C with 9-10 hours of sunshine, sea temperatures reach 21-23°C (warmer than UK summer ever gets), and the resorts are open in full swing without the August crowds. Cappadocia is 12-22°C — every day is a balloon day. Istanbul 17-22°C, perfect for walking the city. Late May is also when the gulet Blue Cruise season properly opens with calm seas. Pick: this is the month for a south coast beach holiday with culture day-trips, a Cappadocia + coast combination, or a first-time gulet week. Book early — May is a popular British school half-term week.
June: full summer arrives, sea hits warm
Antalya and Bodrum reach 28-32°C, sea temperatures 24-26°C (proper warm), 11 hours of sunshine, and the resorts are at 75% capacity. Cappadocia 15-26°C, hot in the afternoon but balloon dawn flights still cool. Istanbul gets warm and humid, 22-27°C, and starts feeling crowded. The school summer holidays have not yet started in the UK so prices are still well below peak. June is the sweet spot for British couples without children — full beach weather, shorter queues at Ephesus and Pamukkale, gulet weeks at their nicest. Pick: any south coast destination, Bodrum peninsula villa, gulet cruise.
July and August: peak heat, peak prices, peak family bookings
Antalya and Bodrum hit 33-38°C, sea temperatures 26-28°C (genuinely hot), Cappadocia mid-30s in the afternoon (balloon dawn still cool). Istanbul is 28-33°C with humidity that surprises British travellers — air conditioning becomes essential. UK school holidays drive prices to peak: family AI weeks in Belek run 2,400-3,500 GBP for four, villas go to peak rates, and direct flight availability tightens. The Aegean coast (Bodrum, Cesme, Alaçati) gets a meltemi wind that keeps it 2-3°C cooler than the Mediterranean — essential knowledge for choosing a destination. Pick: family AI in Belek or Side, or Bodrum peninsula for couples wanting beach club culture. Avoid: Cappadocia mid-day exploration without a hat and water.
September: peak season ends, perfect weather continues
September is the second perfect month after May. Antalya 28-32°C, sea temperatures stay 25-27°C (still warm from the August accumulation), 10 hours of sunshine, and the school holiday crowds have left so prices drop 25-40% from August. Cappadocia 14-26°C, ideal balloon weather. Istanbul 22-27°C, lovely walking weather. Late September is the absolute prime for gulet cruises — empty bays, warm sea, calm conditions. Pick: this is the month for British clients who can travel outside school terms. Beach holidays, Cappadocia trips, gulet weeks, Istanbul long weekends — all excellent.
October: shoulder season returns, still excellent value
Antalya and Bodrum 23-27°C, sea 22-25°C (still swimmable), 8 hours of sunshine. Cappadocia 8-19°C — balloon weather is most reliable in October of any month. The half-term week (typically third week of October) is the last UK family booking window before May, and prices are 35-50% below August equivalents. Istanbul 16-21°C, perfect city break weather, jacket optional. Pick: October half-term family beach holiday, a Cappadocia + coast combination, or a final gulet week of the season. Avoid: snorkelling in shaded coves (sea temperature drops sharply where sunlight is blocked).
November and December: winter arrives, but Istanbul shines
Coastal resorts mostly close from mid-November. Cappadocia returns to 0-12°C with first snowfalls — beautiful for photography and a few resilient hotels stay open. Istanbul becomes a proper winter city: 9-13°C with rain, atmospheric Christmas decorations along Istiklal Caddesi, hammam visits at their most welcome. Direct flights to Antalya and Bodrum thin out; Istanbul flights remain year-round. Pick: Istanbul long weekend (3 nights including New Year), or a Cappadocia winter break for couples seeking a snow-and-balloon experience without the British crowds.
