The best time to visit Turkey: a month-by-month UK traveller guide

15 January 2026

May and October are the unicorns. June and September are nearly as good and half the price.

The simple answer

For the coast (Bodrum, Kalkan, Fethiye, Antalya): late May to mid-June, then mid-September to late October. Sea is 22-26°C, daytime 26-30°C, evenings warm enough for outdoor dining, prices 30-40% lower than peak. For Cappadocia: April-May or late September-October. For Istanbul: April-May or September-October. We avoid August everywhere except Cappadocia.

Month by month

January: Cappadocia in snow is magical (50% balloon cancellation rate). February: Istanbul winter, museums quiet. March: spring flowers in Anatolia, sea still cold. April: ideal for Cappadocia and Istanbul, sea 18-20°C. May: peak shoulder season, all coast and inland excellent. June: hot but bearable, sea 22-24°C, full day length. July: peak heat (35°C inland), sea perfect, prices 50% above shoulder. August: school holidays, busiest, hottest, most expensive. September: same as June with a discount. October: best weather of the year for Istanbul. November: Cappadocia gentle, coast quiet, Istanbul wet. December: Istanbul Christmas markets and snow on Hagia Sophia roof.

UK school holiday squeeze

Half-terms (mid-February, late May, late October) and the long summer (mid-July to early September) overlap with Turkey's busiest weeks. Villas in Kalkan and Bodrum book 9-12 months ahead for these dates. We hold blocks but the headline price rises 30-50%. Easter and October half-term are exceptional value.

What about the heat

Coast temperatures: June 28°C, July 32°C, August 35°C. Cappadocia: same plus 3°C, plus dry. Istanbul: humid, oppressive in August, perfect April-May and September-October.

Festivals worth planning around

Tulip Festival Istanbul (early to mid-April). Antalya Film Festival (October). Konya Mevlana whirling-dervish ceremony (17 December). Major Islamic holidays — Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha — shift annually; many businesses close 3-4 days during Eid.
