Van & Akdamar

Turquoise Lake Van, fluffy white cats and a 10th-century island church.

Lake Van is Turkey’s largest lake, kanka — a 1,648 metre high turquoise inland sea ringed by 4,000-metre volcanoes, and the 30-minute boat to Akdamar Island delivers you to one of the world’s loveliest medieval churches: the 10th-century Armenian Holy Cross, carved with biblical reliefs of Jonah, Adam and David.

Van itself is a friendly university city famous for its breakfast spreads (the legendary Van kahvaltısı with 30+ small dishes), white-eyed Van cats and the cliff-top Van Castle. British travellers fly Stansted/Gatwick/Manchester via Istanbul to Van Ferit Melen (VAN) in roughly 5h 30m on Pegasus, AJet or Turkish Airlines. May–June and September–October are the best windows — alpine wildflowers, 22°C lake breezes, and far fewer coaches than Cappadocia.
