Trabzon is the gateway to Turkey’s emerald Black Sea coast, kanka, and the 4th-century Sümela Monastery clinging 1,200m up a vertical cliff inside Altındere National Park is one of the most photographed sights in the country — yet still under the radar for British travellers.
Inside, frescoes of biblical scenes glow on the rock face, restored after a long conservation project. Trabzon itself blends Black Sea cuisine (cornbread, anchovy hamsi, muhlama cheese fondue), Ottoman timber houses and the gorgeous Atatürk Köşkü mansion overlooking the city. UK guests fly Stansted/Gatwick/Manchester via Istanbul to Trabzon (TZX) in roughly 5h on Pegasus, AJet, Turkish Airlines or SunExpress. Late spring and early autumn (May–June, September–October) bring 20–25°C, lush green yaylas (highland pastures) and the easiest Sümela road conditions.
