Mardin

Honey-stone city floating above the Mesopotamian plain.

Mardin is one of those “how have I never heard of this?” cities, kanka — a thousand-year-old maze of honey-coloured limestone houses cascading down a hillside above the Mesopotamian plain, with views all the way to the Syrian border.

Old Mardin (Eski Mardin) is a UNESCO tentative-list pedestrian quarter where Syriac, Armenian, Arab and Kurdish heritage have lived side-by-side for a millennium; the Deyrulzafaran Monastery (still active) and Kasimiye Medrese are highlights. British travellers fly Stansted/Gatwick/Manchester via Istanbul to Mardin (MQM) in roughly 5h 45m on Pegasus, AJet or Turkish Airlines. The covered Kayseriye Bazaar sells filigree silver, soft Mardin sabuni soap and copper coffee pots. Spring and autumn are the sweet spots — March to May and October to November bring 22–28°C and clear evenings perfect for rooftop suppers of içli köfte and Şıllık dessert.
