Kalkan

The Mediterranean's last quiet harbour

Kalkan is the small Lycian harbour town that British holidaymakers found, fell in love with, and quietly kept to themselves.

There is no airport closer than 90 minutes, no chain hotel, no high-rise. What there is: hand-built villas with infinity pools cascading down the cliffs, a horseshoe of restaurants on the old port, and a hinterland of Lycian rock-cut tombs, mountain valleys and clear-water bays you reach by boat. It is, deliberately, the opposite of a package destination. If you're tired of crowds, want a villa that feels like a private estate, and like the idea of a fish-meze dinner with the harbour at your feet, Kalkan is the answer.

What we arrange

The five experiences that make a Kalkan trip unforgettable

01

Cliffside villa with infinity pool

Hand-picked from a portfolio of 40+ — every property visited and approved by us, full villa-host service, daily pool clean, optional chef.

02

Private boat day

A traditional gulet for the day — Patara beach, Kaputas, Kekova sunken city — with breakfast on board and lunch off the back of the boat.

03

Patara beach

18 kilometres of golden sand, protected loggerhead-turtle nesting site, no buildings — Turkey's most beautiful empty beach.

04

Kas day trip

The artier sister-town next door — antiques shops, Sunday market, Greek-island ferry to Meis.

05

Saklikent gorge

A 300m-deep cleft in the Taurus mountains — wade up the cool river with mountain trout for lunch at the entrance.

When to visit

The right month makes the trip

Ideal: Mid-May to early July, and September

Sea is warm enough for swimming, the heat is bearable, and the villas are at their best. Late July and August are the British school holidays — book 9–12 months ahead and expect 30°C+.

Pair this with

Combine in a single trip

  • Cappadocia (1.5-hr flight via Dalaman→Istanbul→Kayseri)
  • Istanbul (90-min flight)
  • Greek island Meis/Kastellorizo (45-min ferry from Kas)

Common questions

Kalkan: questions British travellers ask us

Why is Kalkan so popular with British visitors?

+

It's been a favourite since the 1990s — a generation of British villa-builders made the town what it is. The result is excellent English spoken everywhere, sterling-friendly pricing, and a holiday culture that knows what British families want (proper kettles, Sunday roasts on request, reliable wifi).

Is Kalkan suitable for families with young children?

+

Yes — most villas have child-safe pools, and the harbour restaurants are universally family-friendly. We tend to recommend villas in the Kalamar Bay or Cuckoo Valley districts for families, where the gradient is gentler.

Do we need a hire car?

+

Not necessarily. Villa hosts arrange airport transfers, restaurant taxis, and boat days. A car is useful if you want day trips to Patara, Kas, Saklikent, or Tlos. We can pre-book one for arrival.

Can we combine Kalkan with a Greek island?

+

Yes — the Meis (Kastellorizo) ferry leaves from Kas, 25 minutes east. Day trip is easy, overnight is possible if you have a Schengen multiple-entry visa.

Returning clients, they remember us

This is our fourth Kalkan trip with Hidden Turkey. They moved us into a villa with the view we asked about last year, and the chef remembered our daughters allergy from 2024.

Family

Honeymoon villa with infinity pool

Private villa above the harbour, sunsets that ruined the camera roll, and a gulet day around Kekova that David is still talking about.

Honeymoon

Three generations, one villa, zero arguments

Six adults, four kids, my parents in their 70s. Separate annex for grandparents, kids pool, Lycian Way day-walk for the adults, Patara beach for everyone.

Family

Quiet Kalkan in February, magical

Off-season villa, mostly empty harbour, a few restaurants open, walks every day. Hidden Turkey arranged a chef visit twice.
