Dalyan

Lycian rock tombs, sea turtles and a sweep of Iztuzu beach

Dalyan is the Turkish Riviera town that British holidaymakers fall in love with and quietly return to year after year.

Tucked thirty minutes north-east of Dalaman airport on a slow river that winds between Lycian rock tombs and the loggerhead-turtle nesting sands of Iztuzu, Dalyan is family-friendly without ever being a resort: there are no all-inclusive towers, the centre is a grid of pavement-cafe streets running down to the wooden fishing jetty, and every hotel runs a daily river boat to the beach. We send couples, multi-generational family groups, walkers, birders and second-time British visitors who have done the busy resorts and now want somewhere with proper character.

What we arrange

The five experiences that make a Dalyan trip unforgettable

01

Iztuzu turtle beach

A 4.5km sand spit between river and sea, protected since 1988 as a Caretta caretta nesting site; UNESCO-listed, no buildings allowed, accessible by river boat from Dalyan jetty for £4.

02

Lycian rock tombs of Kaunos

Six 4th-century-BC kings tombs cut into the cliff face directly opposite the town; lit at night and best photographed from a riverboat at sunset.

03

Sultaniye mud baths and thermal springs

A 2,500-year-old sulphur spring with 39C natural pools; combined river-tour day with mud baths, thermal pool, Kaunos and Iztuzu costs £25 including lunch.

04

Slow river-boat lifestyle

Dalyan has no through traffic — the river runs through the centre, every restaurant has a wooden jetty and you can rent a private boat with skipper for the day for £85.

When to visit

The right month makes the trip

Ideal: May, June, late September and October

Loggerhead turtles nest on Iztuzu from May to August (you can see hatchlings released in September). Daytime temperatures hold 25 to 32 Celsius from May to mid-October, mosquitoes appear in July and August (every hotel provides plug-ins), and the river breeze keeps Dalyan five to seven degrees cooler than Marmaris.

Pair this with

Combine in a single trip

  • Gocek and the 12 Islands (45 minutes by car)
  • Saklikent Gorge and Patara (90 minutes east)

Common questions

Dalyan: questions British travellers ask us

Is Dalyan suitable for British families with young children?

+

Yes — exceptionally so. The town is flat, traffic-free at the centre, the river boat to Iztuzu beach is the daily highlight (children love being skippered down the reed channels), and most family hotels have shaded pools, kids-meal options and English-speaking staff. We recommend Asur, Asur Boutique, Dalyan Resort and Iz Otel for families.

Can we see baby sea turtles in Dalyan?

+

Yes, in season. Loggerhead nests are laid May to early July, hatchlings emerge late August to early October. The Dalyan turtle clinic (free entry, donations welcomed) treats injured adults year-round; the public is allowed to watch from a marked viewing platform. Never use lights on Iztuzu after dark — it disorients hatchlings.

How is Dalyan different from Marmaris or Fethiye?

+

Dalyan is smaller, river-based and built for slow holidays. Marmaris is a large all-inclusive resort with a marina and nightlife. Fethiye is a working harbour town with bigger hotels. Dalyan has no beach in town (you boat to Iztuzu) and no chain hotels — every property is family-owned and most have fewer than fifty rooms.

How do I get from Dalaman airport to Dalyan?

+

A pre-booked private transfer takes 30 minutes and we include it in every package. Public dolmus minibuses also run from Dalaman town centre to Dalyan for £3, but the airport itself sits 6km from the dolmus stop so a private transfer almost always works out simpler with luggage and children.

Are there mosquitoes in Dalyan?

+

Yes, mostly in July and August at dusk by the river. Every hotel provides plug-in repellents free of charge, the town fogs the streets weekly in summer and most restaurants have screened terraces. May, June, September and October are largely mosquito-free.
