Dalaman
Your gateway airport to Dalyan turtles, Sarigerme golden sand and the Lycian Way
Dalaman is the international airport that quietly opens up the most varied stretch of Turkish coastline for British travellers.
The runway sits at the meeting point of the Aegean and Mediterranean and within ninety minutes of arrival you can be in turtle-loving Dalyan, the loggerhead-protected sands of Iztuzu, the pine-clad family resort of Sarigerme, the marina town of Gocek, or the higher boutique villages of Kalkan and Kas along the Lycian Way. We treat Dalaman as the practical hub for the south-west: a stress-free four-hour direct UK flight, a clean modern terminal and short, scenic transfers in every direction.
The five experiences that make a Dalaman trip unforgettable
Dalyan river boat and Iztuzu Beach
A 30-minute drive west of the airport, Dalyan town sits on a slow green river that opens at the sea on Iztuzu, a four-kilometre crescent of soft sand protected as a loggerhead-turtle nesting site. A traditional river-boat day combines mud baths, the rock-cut Lycian tombs of Kaunos and a long lunch on the beach.
Sarigerme family beach
Twenty minutes south-west of Dalaman, Sarigerme is a long Blue Flag stretch of golden sand backed by pine forest and a small cluster of family-resort hotels. The water shelves gently for the first thirty metres and lifeguards work in season; one of the calmest, most child-friendly beach choices on this coast.
Gocek marina and the Twelve Islands
Half an hour east of the airport, Gocek is a tidy marina town used as the launch point for a private day-boat around the Twelve Islands. The cruise visits Yassica, Tersane and Cleopatra Bath bays with swim stops over translucent water and a long lunch on board; one of the simplest, most beautiful day-trips in Turkey.
Saklikent Gorge cool-down
Inland from Dalaman the Saklikent Gorge cuts 18 kilometres into the Taurus mountains, with knee-deep meltwater running through a vertical limestone canyon. Wooden walkways carry you the first kilometre and trout restaurants on platforms above the water give a perfect summer-heat respite. A 75-minute drive each way.
Kalkan and Kas day or transfer
For travellers who want a more boutique base, the same airport puts you 90 minutes from Kalkan (clifftop-villa territory with slow-food restaurants) and around 2h from Kas (laid-back diving and Lycian-coast walking). Both are quieter, higher-end alternatives to the bigger resort towns and both pair beautifully with a Dalyan stop.
The right month makes the trip
Ideal: May, June, September and October
Dalaman shares the south-Aegean climate of Marmaris and Fethiye: long, dry summers and a swim season from May through to early November. May to June and September to October give 26-30°C days, lower humidity and quieter beaches. July and August are reliably 33-37°C, ideal for guaranteed sun but expect peak European charter traffic at the airport.
Dalaman: questions British travellers ask us
Which resorts are reachable from Dalaman airport?
+
Dalaman is the most useful airport on the south-west coast. Common transfer times: Sarigerme 20 minutes, Gocek 30 minutes, Dalyan 30 minutes, Fethiye and Olu Deniz 45-55 minutes, Marmaris 90 minutes, Kalkan and Patara 90-100 minutes, Kas 2 hours. We arrange the private door-to-door transfer in every package and brief you on travel time before you book.
How long is the flight from London to Dalaman?
+
Direct flights from London Gatwick to Dalaman (DLM) typically run 4 hours 10 minutes outbound and 4 hours 25 minutes on the return. Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol add 10-15 minutes each way. Several UK airports run direct flights through the summer, with the lowest-cost capacity on Jet2 and easyJet and the most refined seat product on Turkish Airlines.
Should I stay in Dalaman town itself?
+
Usually not. Dalaman town and the village strip near the airport are convenient for a one-night arrival or departure stop but lack the seafront character of nearby resorts. Most British clients move straight on to Sarigerme, Dalyan, Gocek, Fethiye or Kalkan. We only book a Dalaman hotel if your flight times make the long transfer impractical.
Is Dalaman airport easy for first-time British visitors?
+
Yes. The terminal is modern, well-signed in English, has fast-track passport options and free WiFi throughout. e-Visa requirements were ended for British passport-holders in March 2024, so UK travellers can now arrive visa-free for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Our private transfer driver meets you in arrivals with a name board.
Is a hire car worth it from Dalaman?
+
Optional. If you are based in Dalyan, Sarigerme or Gocek for a week and only want gentle day-trips, a hire car is not essential and we organise private excursions instead. If you plan to chain Kalkan, Kas, Patara, Saklikent and Dalyan into a self-drive week, a hire car from Dalaman airport gives you the flexibility for very little extra cost.
