Cesme
Whitewashed peninsula on the Aegean, 75 minutes from Izmir
Cesme (pronounced chesh-meh) is the western tip of the Turkish Aegean coast, a wind-cooled peninsula that Istanbul weekends in but the British market has only recently discovered.
Seventy-five minutes west of Izmir airport on a flat motorway, Cesme is built around a 14th-century Genoese castle on a working harbour, surrounded by a chain of windsurfing-perfect bays (Alacati, Ilica, Ayayorgi), Aegean white-cube design hotels, world-class fish restaurants, and the warm-water thermal beach at Sifne. We send couples after a stylish Aegean week, foodies, kitesurfers and second-time British clients who already know Bodrum and want somewhere with cleaner architecture and shorter transfers.
The five experiences that make a Cesme trip unforgettable
Alacati windsurfing capital
A flat-water lagoon with reliable Meltemi winds and an internationally certified Pro World Cup beach; rentals from £35 a day, lessons from £55 an hour with British-trained instructors.
Aegean white-cube architecture
Alacati village is a UNESCO-tentative-listed grid of stone houses with cobalt shutters, bougainvillea-draped streets and a Wednesday market famous across Turkey.
Ilica thermal sand beach
A wide white-sand beach with naturally warm thermal currents bubbling up through the sand at the eastern end; one of the few year-round bathing beaches in the Aegean.
Day-boat to Chios (Greece)
A 35-minute ferry reaches the Greek island of Chios with its medieval walled towns of Mesta and Pyrgi; UK passport holders enter visa-free as day visitors.
The right month makes the trip
Ideal: May, June, September and early October
Cesme is exposed to the Meltemi north wind which drops summer temperatures by three to four degrees compared to the southern Riviera. June to August is sunny and breezy (perfect windsurfing), May and September offer 25 to 28 Celsius warm sea without crowds, and the architecture photographs best in shoulder season clear light.

Cesme: questions British travellers ask us
How is Cesme different from Bodrum?
+
Cesme is more architecturally pure (whitewashed cube houses, no high-rise development), windier in summer (which keeps it cooler), more food-focused than nightlife-focused, and the transfer from a major airport (Izmir) is shorter at 75 minutes versus 30 minutes for Bodrum but with fewer UK direct flights. Many British clients now alternate between the two.
Can I learn to windsurf or kitesurf in Alacati?
+
Yes. Alacati has the most consistent flat-water windsurfing conditions in Europe — the lagoon is shallow, the Meltemi blows force 4-6 from June to September, and three internationally accredited schools (Mistral, Myga, Sail Up) run RYA-style introductory courses from £180 for three half-days with English-speaking instructors.
Which Cesme village is best for a UK couples holiday?
+
For couples we book Alacati village itself (white-cube boutique B&Bs, no swimming pool but walkable to restaurants). For a beach-and-pool base we book Ilica (long sandy beach, four- and five-star resort hotels). For total quiet we book Cesmealti or Cesme Marina. Walkers and foodies almost always prefer Alacati.
Is the day-trip to Chios worth it?
+
Yes if you want to add a stamp and tick a Greek island. Chios is famous for its mastiha gum villages (Mesta and Pyrgi are remarkable) and its quayside fish lunch. The 35-minute ferry runs daily, costs around £35 return and UK passport holders enter Greece visa-free as day visitors. Bring your passport.
Can we combine Cesme with Ephesus and Pamukkale?
+
Yes — this is one of our most popular Aegean tours. Three to four nights in Cesme, then a private car south to Ephesus and Selcuk (90 minutes), then onward to Pamukkale (3 hours), then back via Izmir for departure. We pre-book private English-speaking drivers and licensed Ephesus guides on this route.
