Icmeler vs Marmaris

Two miles round the headland, two completely different holidays.

Icmeler and Marmaris share the same bay on the south Aegean coast, separated by a pine-clad headland and a flat coast road. They look the same on a map but they feel like different holidays once you arrive. Icmeler is the smaller, quieter sister: a sweeping 2 km sand crescent, a flat seafront promenade, three- and four-star all-inclusive hotels designed around families, and a single main strip with cafes and small bars. Marmaris is the bigger resort: a long marina, a Crusader castle in the old town, a busy Bar Street and a string of larger all-inclusive hotels.

Our verdict

Pick Icmeler for a calm family week with sand under your feet; pick Marmaris for marina nightlife, more hotel choice and a livelier evening strip.

Beach and water

Icmeler beach is the more family-friendly of the two: a wide imported-sand crescent that has held the Blue Flag every summer since 2009, water that shelves gently for fifty metres, and lifeguards in summer. Marmaris beach is longer but more urban; the central section is paved seafront fronting hotels rather than a continuous sand strip. For under-tens, Icmeler is the obvious pick.

Evening character

Icmeler has a flat 1.5 km seafront promenade with pavement cafes, ice-cream parlours and small bars — perfect for a family stroll after dinner. Marmaris has the famous Bar Street (Barlar Sokagi) which is busy, loud and fun if that is your scene, and the marina with seafront restaurants for quieter evenings. Many families spend the week in Icmeler and pop into Marmaris one evening for the bazaar.

Hotel pricing

Pricing is broadly identical at the four-star level — both around £790 pp for a UK 7-night package in May 2026 — because the same UK tour operators contract both belts. Five-star prices favour Marmaris (more options at the top end). Three-star prices favour Icmeler (more small family hotels). We match the right one to your group size and budget.

Frequently asked questions

Is Icmeler better than Marmaris for a UK family with young children?

Yes, almost always. The beach is wider, the water shallower, the seafront flatter and the all-inclusive hotels are designed around family pools. Marmaris is busier with a longer waterfront and louder nightlife. Many families spend their week in Icmeler and pop into Marmaris one evening for the bazaar.

How do I get between Icmeler and Marmaris?

The dolmus minibus runs every five minutes along the coast road, costs £1.50 and stops outside every hotel. A taxi costs £8 to £12. The pine-forest walking path over the headland is 4km, marked, and takes around an hour at family pace.

Which has better four-star all-inclusive?

Comparable. In Icmeler we book Munamar Beach Residence, Mares Park, Sentido Orka Lotus and Marti Resort. In Marmaris we book Grand Yazici Mares, Green Nature Resort and Munamar Marmaris. All are four-star half-board with sea-view rooms and full kids clubs in English.

Is the transfer from Dalaman the same?

Effectively yes — both are roughly 90 minutes south-east of Dalaman airport on a fast motorway, with Icmeler 5 minutes further than Marmaris itself. We pre-book a private English-speaking driver for every transfer.

Which is better if we want a mix of quiet days and lively nights?

Stay in Icmeler and dolmus into Marmaris for two or three evenings during your week. This gives families the calm beach base by day and the option of marina or Bar Street nightlife when the children are asleep with a babysitter. Most of our repeat British clients now do exactly this.
